Make an Impact Locally!
If you are like most of us, you are extremely concerned about what our current government leaders are doing on so many fronts and have probably wondered what you could do to change things.
In July 2025, the Town of Washington Democratic Committee will hold a caucus to nominate Democratic candidates for the November 2025 election. Three positions are open for the Washington Town Board, including Town Supervisor, and one seat is open for the Millbrook Village Board of Trustees. It is through local political races that we build a strong Democratic bench, protect our democratic values and institutions here at home, and create opportunities to make a positive impact right here in the Town of Washington.
Although local government is small and far less visible than the onslaught of threats we witness daily from the federal government, local board decisions, especially in planning and zoning, play an outsized role in shaping the character and future of our community. Without a local newspaper, and with only a handful of people attending public meetings, most local government decisions are made almost entirely under the radar.
Dutchess County government is dominated by Republican elected officials. In the Town of Washington, the Town Board has been dominated by Republicans for many decades. In most town elections, Republicans run for Town Board seats unopposed, a common phenomenon in rural communities across the country. While Democrats have fared better at the Village level, the Republicans currently hold the majority. In 2024, the Republican mayoral candidate ran unopposed, thus assuring a Republican majority at the Village level. It does not have to be this way.
Democrats have a real chance of winning Town and Village seats if they run and if they show up to vote, particularly in off-year elections like November 2025. Among registered active voters in the Town of Washington as of Feb 2025, approximately 36% are Democrats; 29% are Republicans; and 33% are No Official Party. Generally, local town and village races are not won on partisan lines. The best candidates have crossover appeal with all segments of the electorate in a small rural community like ours.
Our town Democrats are a group of well-informed, fair-minded citizens with a broad range of skills and talents. They should be at the table!
If you have any interest in running for office, or if you just want to learn more about the process, please contact us through the form below. A member of the Committee will reach out to begin a conversation. We look forward to hearing from you!
